Digital News Sources
As digital technologies become ever more sophisticated and readily available, consumers are able to access news content in a variety of ways.
Just over one million people access news or editorial content via websites (35% of the total online population of ROI) – by far the largest of all digital formats. A distant second, mobile apps are used by around 160,000 consumers and email or text alerts by 150,000 (c. 5% of internet users). Blogs are accessed by 110,000 adults, while news-related podcasts are downloaded by slightly more than 90,000.
Interestingly, internet users aged 15-24 are less likely to access content via websites, only 31% do so, while 42% of 35-44 year olds use this platform. Instead, these younger consumers are considerably more likely than their older counterparts to watch online video streams [164], read Twitter feeds [187] and use RSS feeds [205].
