More workers choose not to retire
The number of people in NI choosing to delay retirement or remain employed in a part-time capacity has increased again. Latest data shows that 5% of those aged 65+ work at least eight hours a week, up from 3% in 2005.
Although the recession may have forced some people to stay in work longer than they had planned, TGI shows a steady upward trend stretching back to 2003 – a trend that is mirrored in GB.
An ageing population means the senior market will become increasingly important in the years to come. In Northern Ireland the over-50s already represent over 70% of home-owners (those who have paid off their mortgage), a third of those with a personal income in excess of £30,000, and 60% of those planning to buy a new car in the next five years. Thirty-five per cent took a holiday abroad in the past year compared to only 30% of adults aged under 50.
